Summary
[edit]DescriptionMoorings near Gas Street Basin, Birmingham - geograph.org.uk - 1734056.jpg |
English: Moorings near Gas Street Basin, Birmingham The canals in central Birmingham have been smartened up and developed in recent years in order to make them attractive to use, to live by and trade by. Visitor moorings are good here, but arrive early, because when they're gone, it's not so easy to find a safe place to leave your boat while you explore the city. The basin behind the camera is where the Worcester and Birmingham Canal terminated when it was built in the early 1790s. Any images of this scene before the 1990s will be welcomed on this website.
In the background, Birmingham's Mailbox shopping arcade opened just before Christmas 2000. The Mailbox is an upmarket development of offices, designer shops, restaurants, bars and luxury city-centre apartments. It includes a mini supermarket and three art galleries and it is also home to BBC Birmingham. On the right, the walkway leads to a footbridge across the canal, which takes a 95 degree turn to the right in front of The Mailbox. |
