Description

A estátua de Pedro da Fonseca fica situada no largo entre a Igreja Matriz e a Câmara Municipal de Proença-a-Nova. Pedro da Fonseca era uma pessoa célebre do nosso concelho, nascida no ano de 1528, em Proença-a-Nova e que veio a falecer anos mais tarde em Lisboa. Os seus pais chamavam-se Pedro da Fonseca e Helena Dias. Aos vinte anos entrou na Companhia de Jesus, indo fazer os seus estudos de filosofia num colégio que a Companhia tinha em Safins. Depois passou para Évora, onde teve como mestres Bartolomeu dos Mártires da Ordem de S. Domingos. Dali foi mais tarde mandado para Coimbra, onde ensinou filosofia e ao mesmo tempo fazia os seus estudos de Teologia. Doutorou-se em Teologia e doou à Igreja de Proença-a-Nova um crucifixo em ouro e um pedaço do Santo-Lenho. Era considerado o Aristóteles português porque tinha um vasto saber, perspicácia e acuidade de espírito.
