Description Francisco Sá Carneiro (1934-1980), figura muito marcante da política portuguesa no pós-25 de Abril de 1974, foi um dos fundadores do Partido Popular Democrático (PPD), mais tarde designado por Partido Social Democrata (PSD). Assumiu a liderança do PPD/PSD, em 1979, ormando uma aliança com o CDS e o PPM, que levou à criação da Aliança Democrática (AD), vencedora das eleições legislativas desse mesmo ano, com maioria absoluta no Parlamento. Sá Carneiro tornou-se Primeiro Ministro de Portugal, mas a sua governação foi muito curta, pois a 4 de Dezembro de 1980, em plena campanha eleitoral para a Presidência da República, morre juntamente com o seu Ministro da Defesa, Adelino Amaro da Costa, entre outros tripulantes, num desastre de aviação, quando o bimotor Cessna onde seguiam se despenhou em Camarate. O monumento construído em sua homenagem através de subscrição pública, lançada pelo jornal O Dia, apresenta 19 m de altura total, traduzindo uma peça em betão e aço inoxidável, com a cabeça de bronze deste político.
