Defendeu a vila de Monção da invasão espanhola e a ela é dedicado o brasão de Monção. Lenda ou realidade, Deu-la-Deu Martins é uma figura conceituada e que ficou para sempre na História de Portugal. Brasão da Vila de Monção No século XIV Monção foi cercada pelos soldados de Castela em virtude da guerra que decorria entre D. Fernando de Portugal e Henrique II de Castela. É desta altura que data a lenda de Deu-la-Deu Martins, mulher do capitão-mor de Monção, Vasco Gomes de Abreu. Após um longo cerco às muralhas de Monção, a fome reinava no interior da fortaleza, e começavam os habitantes a pensar em rendição. No entanto, Deu-La-Deu manda recolher o pouco trigo que existia pelas cercanias e manda cozer alguns pães. Lançando-os aos galegos, depressa a estratégia teve um efeito devastador nas hostes inimigas que julgaram estar a fazer um cerco a uma vila onde reinava a abundância. Figura histórica ou simples lenda, o que é certo é que muitos reclamam ser seus descendentes e em sua honra foi erigida a estátua que adorna a Praça de DeulaDeu, supostamente mandado construir pelo seu bisneto.
