| Description |
English: This monumental sarcophagus is made of Marmara marble (ancient Proconnese, Turkey). The main face is adorned with two rows of large strigils (S-shaped grooves) that face each other and create an almond-shaped center space in which there is a couple (identified by some as Eros and Psyche, the symbols funeral of body and soul). At the ends, two large narrow metopes each show, on rocky ground, a bearded shepherd watering, with the aid of a canthare, the animal he carries on his shoulders, in front of a bleating sheep and the foliage of a stylized tree, possibly an olive tree. The sides are decorated to the left of a lion and to the right of a lioness, both winged and horned, crouching in front of a tree whose foliage also grows in the pastors scene. It is now in the Musée d'art et d'histoire of Geneva (MAH). |
