English: 7 November 2008. Monument Way, Tottenham looking westward.
Both ends of Monument Way are disfigured by huge illuminated billboards. The central section is a welcome stretch of grass verges, trees, bushes and brick wall. I have mixed feelings about illuminated advertising panels on bus stops. They are another way to clutter-up streets with ads. On the other hand they bring extra light to areas where people are standing and waiting - sometimes in isolated spots. From this angle and in this early evening light, the vertical yellow bars of Western Union's ad seemed to echo the colours of the distinctive block on the left. As does the sunset sky. The buildings are part of a hostel at 99 High Cross Road, designed by Walter Menteth Architects. (More information here.) The bank on the left of the photo is a green bund, built from spoil when the previous hostel was demolished. This shields hostel buildings from traffic noise and pollution. In the centre of the photo (further west along Monument Way) spoil from the road's building was previously made into another bund - which shields Welbourne Primary School.
