Monolophosaurus jiangi Zhao & Currie, 1993 theropod dinosaur (reconstruction) from the Jurassic of China (public display, British Columbia Royal Museum, Victoria, British Columbia, Canada) (reconstruction based on IVPP 84019, Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology, Beijing, China) (photo taken & donated by Cary Easterday). Classification: Animalia, Chordata, Vertebrata, Dinosauria, Theropoda, Megalosauroidea Stratigraphy: reddish sandstones, upper Wucaiwan Member, lower Shishugou Formation, upper Middle Jurassic Locality: ~34 km northeast of Jiangjunmiao ("General Jiang's Temple", an abandoned desert inn), Gurbantunggut Desert, eastern Junggar Basin, northeastern Xinjiang Province, northwestern China Reference: Zhao Xi-Jin & P.J. Currie. 1993. A large crested theropod from the Jurassic of Xinjiang, People's Republic of China. Canadian Journal of Earth Sciences 30: 2027-2036. Theropod were small to large, bipedal dinosaurs. Almost all known members of the group were carnivorous (predators and/or scavengers). They represent the ancestral group to the birds, and some theropods are known to have had feathers. Some of the most well known dinosaurs to the general public are theropods, such as Tyrannosaurus, Allosaurus, and Spinosaurus. |
