Shell subovate, with concentric furrows; anteriorside smooth; disk with a single row of irregulartubercles in the centre, some of which are elongatedand grooved; posterior side narrowed, with a widefurrow and a few small tubercles; umbonial slopestraight, carinated and tuberculated; posterior slopeconcave, indistinctly tuberculated; ligament sloperectilinear, oblique; extremity direct, emarginate;basal margin swelling centrally, emarginate behind;umbo prominent, rather broad, flattened at the sum-mit; beaks retuse; epidermis yellowish-brown, withindistinct filiform rays over the umbo; within white;cardinal teeth rather small, direct, double in eachvalve. OBSERVATIONS. This handsome species is allied to U. quadrulus,Raf., but is very distinct, the young shell havingbroad smooth and retuse beaks, whilst the young ofthe qaadrulus has the beaks narrowed, tuberculated,pointed and curved forwards.
