Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Monk Bar, York Originally called Monkgate Bar, Monk Bar is the strongest and tallest of the gateway towers in York's medieval city walls. The first three floors were built in the 14th century and a fourth added in the 15th. It has a working portcullis with original winding gear which was used regularly right up until 1970. There are tiny circular rooms in the turrets where mutinous apprentices and rebellious Catholics were imprisoned in the 16th century.
