Summary

[edit]
Description JOPLIN, Mo. -- Tim Gouger, a debris subject matter expert and contracting officer representative at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Joplin Recovery Field Office, checks the progress of debris removal here July 12. By July 17, USACE contractors had removed more than 1.23 million cubic yards of debris from public rights-of-way and private property damaged or destroyed by the EF-5 tornado that struck the city May 22. The storm destroyed more than 6,900 homes, damaged another 875, and left about 500 commercial properties, a hospital and most of the city schools in shambles. Gouger is one of more than 300 USACE employees who have volunteered to support the federal recovery efforts here. (U.S. Army photo/Mark Haviland)
