And now, the classic Halloween spook—Monarch Butterflies? Although not normally associated with Halloween in the United States, Monarch Butterflies are an important part of the Day of the Dead celebrations in parts of Mexico. There, they symbolize or herald the return of the spirits of the ancestors. It’s not just our neighbors to the South that think highly of Monarchs. USGS research showed that Americans place great value on these impressive butterflies, which migrate thousands of miles between the United States and Mexico each year.
