Description

Saint Macartan's Cathedral, Monaghan, County Monaghan, Ireland

English: Stained glass window in the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament, i.e. the second south-most side chapel, depicting the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the centre light. The left light displays Melchizedek, king of Salem, bringing out bread and wine to bless Abraham and his soldiers (Gen 14:18–20). The sacrifice of Isaac is shown in the right light. The window was created by Earley and Powell. This was the first stained glass window of the cathedral. There are two lines at the bottom, the first one of them reads as follows: “Erected by Andrew Clark S.S.C. Leith in memory of 1st his great grand uncle the Most Rev. Jas Murphy 24 years bishop of Clogher & 56 years P.P.” This refers to James Murphy who succeeded as bishop of Clogher on 3 November 1801 and died on 19 November 1824.
