Description

SANDIA RESEARCHER STANDS NEXT TO MOLECULAR BEAM EPITAXY SYSTEM.

WORKING THROUGH A COOPERATIVE RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT AGREEMENT (CRADA) WITH CIELO COMMUNICATIONS INC., SANDIA DEVELOPED THE GALLIUM ARSENIDE-BASED VERTICAL CAVITY SURFACE EMITTING LASER (VCSEL). IT WILL BE CHEAPER AND EASIER TO BUILD THAN STANDARD EDGE EMITTING LASERS USED IN CURRENT HIGH-SPEED FIBER OPTICS COMMUNICATIONS. THE MOLECULAR BEAM EPITAXY SYSTEM SEEN IN THE IMAGE IS USED TO GROW THE CRYSTAL STRUCTURE OF THE VCSEL.
