SANDIA RESEARCHER STANDS NEXT TO MOLECULAR BEAM EPITAXY SYSTEM. WORKING THROUGH A COOPERATIVE RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT AGREEMENT (CRADA) WITH CIELO COMMUNICATIONS INC., SANDIA DEVELOPED THE GALLIUM ARSENIDE-BASED VERTICAL CAVITY SURFACE EMITTING LASER (VCSEL). IT WILL BE CHEAPER AND EASIER TO BUILD THAN STANDARD EDGE EMITTING LASERS USED IN CURRENT HIGH-SPEED FIBER OPTICS COMMUNICATIONS. THE MOLECULAR BEAM EPITAXY SYSTEM SEEN IN THE IMAGE IS USED TO GROW THE CRYSTAL STRUCTURE OF THE VCSEL. For more information or additional images, please contact 202-586-5251. |
