English: Modified stile Clearly this stile originally had rails, but now only the steps to negotiate them remain. The location between the legs of an electricity pylon is also strange.
This footpath appears puzzling when seen on the map as it runs parallel and close to an established road, Green Lane. This road however has been substantially modified over time. The name derives from the fact that it was originally the village green for Lambley, i.e. common land where stock could be grazed, although not in the centre of the village, as was more normal. It was very much wider that the current lane, and in fact incorporated the land on either side which is now occupied by dwellings. This can be seen clearly on larger scale maps, and also by the fact that the dwellings are largely built at right angles to the road with gardens running parallel to the road. The footpath follows the outer boundaries of the dwelling plots, and probably indicates the original boundary. |
