Title |
Modern wax seal impression |
||
Description |
English: A 20.67mm in diameter circular copper-allo medieval seal matrix with a 22.28mm high faceted, conical handle that ends in a suspension loop. The central motif is a small heart, pierced vertically by a large arrow. This is surrounded by a beaded border and then the inscription, which reads *S' STEPhANI. LE. FL[---]RRE. There is a small area of the edge missing, which has removed the top part of three letters. The lower surviving parts are all curved, perhaps either Es or Cs. A plausible reconstruction of the inscription might be *S' STEPhANI. LE. FLECERRE, Seal of Stephen the Fletcher, which would make the motif of the arrow (an unusual motif) relevant to the surname. |
