ch could be called first-class. Among others whichI saw were the ponies of the Spanish Polo Team ofthe Brothers Larios, who were mounted entirely onBarbs in the International Tournament at Paris in1894. As they were allowed to be the best team onthe Rock, we may presume that they were mountedon the pick of that place. We had four Barbs in ourstable in 1893, and six in 1894; but out of all ofthem Trappist was the only first-class player. Hewas imported from Gibraltar by Captain C. GordonMackenzie, and now belongs to Mr. Ashton of the BARBS. 201 2nd Life Guards, who was playing him in 1901.My Editor, who broke in a large number of poniesat Gibraltar and Malta, and who made particularinquiries respecting the galloping powders of Barbs, shares my opinion as to their inferiority to Arabs. He regards them to be, on an average, about threestone worse on the flat, say, for a mile, than Arabs ofthe same height; and looks upon them, in comparisonto the sons of the Desert, as a particularly sulky.
Text Appearing After Image:
Fig. 85.—Mr. J. R. Walkers Barb pony Sherry. spiritless breed. Mr. T. B. Drybrough (and so didthe late Mr. Moray Brown) thinks highly of Barbs.Mr. Drybrough maintains that the reason why fewBarbs are exported, is that the dealers cannot afford tobuy really good ones, which the rich natives keep forthemselves. In my opinion the faults of Barbs for polo are:— I. Want of speed. 202 BREEDS OF POLO PONIES. (Chap. VIII. 2. Inability to go through deep ground, stay, orcarry weight. 3. The possession of at least one, if not several, vices, such as refusing to face a scrimmage or a back-hander, refusing to hustle, looking round and trying tosavage other ponies instead of doing their best in thegame, and being sluggish. 4. Want of courage, and tendency to become jady ifhurt by ball or stick. 5. Softheartedness, which is often shown by theirdoing well enough in ordinary games ; but cutting itwhen forced to go faster than they like, and againstbetter ponies than themselves. 6. Lastly and worst
