His earlyand perfect mastery of the technic of composition suggests an interestingcomparison with Wagner. Both these masters won immortality withtheir operas. Both threw themselves with all the enthusiasm of youthinto this branch of art. Wagners experience, acquired by early activityas a conductor, has its counterpart in the strict training Mozart receivedfrom his travels as a musician, begun in childhood. The result in eachcase is clearness. Both these musicians are from the outset completemasters of the complicated apparatus required for the writing of an opera—an apparatus which most composers learn to control only by long andlaborious effort, with hard struggles and disappointments.
