Title
Modern jet chain link (profile)
Description
English: Fragment of a Whitby jet link from a mourning necklace or chain, made fashionable in the 19th century by Queen Victoria once in mourning for Prince Albert. Half of the two circular apertures survive, now semi-circular, and part of the fine section dividing the two holes. There is not enough of the piece to determine if it was originally a complete link or one made of two halves, which were joined with small twisted wires and glue, in order to alternate with and connect to the complete examples. The link appears to have been made by working from both polished faces inward, as their is a central ridge inside each of the apertures, which was not filed off as it would not have been seen when complete.

Cornish fishermen who worked in the North Sea would purchase some Whitby jet for their ladies back home, and this is particularly documented from the 1840s on for those fishermen from Newlyn and Mousehole (Joanna Mattingly pers comm), where this item was found.

Muller (1987) illustrates similar examples on pages 85 & 89, in Figs.5.26 & 5.32, which are dated to the Victorian period.
