In William White's History, Gazetteer, and Directory of Norfolk (1845) Swanton Abbott is described as "a large scattered village, 2½ miles S.S.W. of North Walsham, and 12 miles N. by E. of Norwich, partly occupied by weavers, and has in its parish 501 souls, and 1103A.2R.8P., of which only 946 acres are assessable." St Michael's church > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/629777 is located at the end of Church Lane, about one kilometre north of the centre of the village, and a short distance east of the Community Primary School > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/629777 in Youngman's Lane, a cul-de-sac > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/629798. Aylsham Road > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/451809 connects with the B1150 (Norwich Road) in the east and with the A140 (also called Norwich Road) in the west; it skirts the village on its southwestern edge. The main road though the village is The Street, turning off Aylsham Road and running in northerly direction. The Street meets Church Lane > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/629785 further to the north and connects with Long Common Lane further east. The Jolly Farmers > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/451802 is the only pub, the village Post Office has recently been closed; the houses and cottages range from 17th century to modern. |
