Title
Modern Stoup
Description
English: White Metal and lead alloy with tin plating. Stoup. Cast plate representing Christ carrying the Cross in low relief. A separately moulded semi-circular lead alloy vessel with scalloped edge and ribbed sides is soldered to the plate. This would be a receptacle for holy water, customarily positioned at the door of a house so that occupants or visitors might bless themselves in passing. This custom was favoured by Roman Catholics, some of whom - especially Irish Catholics - keep up the custom to this day. The image of Christ carrying the Cross is one of the stages of His Passion, presented as Stations of the Cross on the aisle walls of Catholic churches. The motif would be apt to a working household, where toil daily undertaken might resonate with this motif. The householder where the object was found kindly notes that, at least in so far as their surnames suggest, the previous residents were of English rather than Irish extraction. A significant population of Irish Catholic labourers was established in Scunthorpe to serve the local iron and steel industries which burgeoned from the mid-19th century. Suggested date: Modern, 1850-1950.

Height: 109.5mm, Thickness (plate): c.3mm, Width: 53.7mm, Weight: 101.45gms.
