Title
Modern Anti-Aircraft Shrapnel
Description
English: Copper alloy anti-aircraft shrapnel fragment. A sub-rectangular fragment of a cast casing, with wide shallow grooves oriented in opposite directions on its two sides, and with its edges torn by explosive force. This is from the casing of a heavy anti-aircraft shell. The grooved surfaces were intended to maximise the fragmentation of the shell, which would usually explode at a predetermined altitude, hopefully near enemy aircraft. This shard was probably deposited during the defence of Grimsby and the Humber against German attack during the Second World War. Suggested date: Modern, 1939-1945

Length: 48.6mm, Width: 37mm, Thickness: 2.6mm, Weight: 29.70gms
