[edit]DescriptionModel of the quarry at Puna Pau (17169950957).jpg |
Model of the quarry at Puna Pau, where the red scoria was quarried to make the pukao for the moai. Although scoria occurs in other places on the island, the 'pukao' were all quarried at Puna Pau. Perhaps the symbolic significance of the volcanic crater as a passage in-between the worlds of 'ao' (the everyday) and 'po' (the afterlife) made the rock very special indeed. The special significance attached to volcanoes as potential passages or conduits between 'ao' and 'po' made them as appropriate place for disposal of the dead in certain circumastances. @mcrmuseum
