Summary
[edit]DescriptionModel of a taforeia, Museu de Marinha, Lisbon.JPG |
English: Model of a taforeia, a medieval Portuguese ship, in the Museu de Marinha (Navy Museum) in Lisbon, Portugal. Reference : MO-IV-20. Scale : approximately 1/30e.
Taforeias were used as transport vessels (to transport horses) and aslo as fighting vessels, during the reign of the king John II in the 15th century. Taforeias were also used during the 16th century in the fleets of the far East, with a different rigging. During this period they were notably used by Alonso de Albuquerque for transporting horses from Persia to India, and he used two of them in his fleet during his conquest of Ormuz in 1514.
