Summary

[edit]
Description

'Pukao' or topknots were very important to the Rapanui as a symbol of status, power and authority. Many statues or 'moai' on the island had 'pukao' or topknots on their heads because they represented very important ancestors. Some 'pukao' are located along the tracks leading to and from the quarry in the volcanic crater of Puna Pau. In this location they served as markers enabling the Rapanui to prepare themselves step-by-step for working in the quarry and the condition of 'tapu' brought about by exposure to the rock.
