Nr. 28. Dendrologische Notizen. 177 Sequoia gigantea Kann, wohlgeraerkt: an älteren Exemplaren, durch Frostalle Äste erfrieren und dann einen völlig vertrockneten Eindruck machen. DerLaie glaubt dann, daß nichts mehr zu retten ist und haut den kahlen Stamm kurzerHand ab. Meist aber hat der Mittelschaft der Wellingtonie nicht gelitten und treibt,wenn die trockenen Äste dicht am Stamme abgeschnitten sind, aus diesem reichund kräftig wieder aus, so daß nach einer Reihe von Jahren der Baum wieder einennormalen Anblick bietet. Man wird gut tun, beim Abschneiden der Äste radikalvorzugehen und nicht etwa ein oder zwei Zweige, die zufällig nicht mit erfrorensind, stehen zu lassen. Dies wirkt auf das Wiederausschlagen nachteilig ein, würdeim übrigen auch die Form der sich wiederbildenden Beastung und Krone rechthäßlich machen. Leider gibt es recht viele Pflanzenfreunde und noch mehr-Freundinnen, die lieber einen häßlichen Anblick mit in den Kauf nehmen, als »denarmen Zweig, der
