Tiersegnungen waren in der Vergangenheit traditionell katholische Veranstaltungen, bei denen Bauern ihre Nutztiere segnen ließen. Die Alltagsbeobachtung zeigt jedoch, dass gerade im Rheinland in den letzten zwei Jahrzehnten in vielen – auch evangelischen – Gemeinden Tiersegnungen und – Gottesdienste, auch eine Wallfahrt mit Hunden, neu entstanden sind. Die Beteiligten setzen sich dabei aus Freizeit- und Turnierreitern, Hunde- und Kleintierhaltern zusammen. Diese Entwicklung verweist sowohl auf einen Wandel in der Mensch-Tier-Beziehung als auch auf die Suche nach neuen Formen von Religiosität sowie auf Veränderungen in der Liturgie und der Stellung des Tieres im christlichen Glauben.
