Cairo is not the Cairo of the tourist;there are no tourists there. Many ofthe great hotels are given over to hos-pitals. The Mena at the Pyramids,Ghezireh Palace in the gardens acrossthe Nile, the great Palace Hotel atHeliopolis, said to be the finest hotel inthe Near East, are filled with woundedsoldiers. It was a sad sight, indeed, tolook into the magnificent marble ball-room and the dining rooms created forgala festivities at this fashionable sub-urb, and find them crowded with thecots of sufferers—many of them wound-ed in defending the canal through whichwe had just passed.
