This is a typical back yard in the slum district of Chicago. How is it possiblefor boys and girls amidst such surroundings to grow up pure, clean and noble? leading to the Chicago Boys Club. Herhair is disheveled, her clothing is tat-tered and torn, her worn-out shoes butpartially protect her feet from the stonepavement, her hands and face are grimywith the dust of the street. Poor littleatom amidst the mighty throng of StateStreet. Herself in sore need of a pro-tector, she is, on the contrary, standingguard over a restless little bundle in thebaby cab—a child about two and a halfor three years of age, evidently brotherto the weazened little mother who with a noble, self-sacrificing heart, standsguard for nearly two hours over a bat-tered old baby cab—once doubtless theouting-rig of some more fortunate childand rescued for its present use from thecity dump.
