Location.—Tuskegee, a small town ofabout 2,500 people, the county seat ofMacon county, forty miles east of Mont-gomery, and one hundred and thirty-sixmiles west of Atlanta, Ga., is one of themost beautiful towns of Alabama. TheInstitute is about a mile from the town.Its site overlooks the surrounding coun-try for some distance, which makes itbeautiful for location. For the sake ofconvenience to the Institute the railroadhas been extended from the town to itsgrounds. When Established.—The Institute wasestablished under the name of the Tus-kegee Normal School by an act of theAlabama legislature, session of 1880, ap-propriating two thousand dollars for thepurposes of the institution.
