Les pélicans sont des oiseaux de mer (ou oiseaux marins). Ce terme désigne particulièrement tout oiseau qui tire la totalité ou une partie de son alimentation de la mer. De nombreuses espèces sont considérées comme des oiseaux marins, car ils entretiennent avec le milieu maritime des relations de dépendance plus ou moins variables : les Pélécanidés en font partie.

Many species are considered seabirds, because they maintain more or less variable relationships of dependency with the marine environment: the Pelecanidae are one of them.
