English: This table is our way of symbolizing that members of our profession of arms are missing from our midst. They are unable to dine with us, so we remember them for their ultimate sacrifice and their devotion to a grateful nation.
The tablecloth is white, symbolizing the purity of their intentions to respond to their country’s call to arms. The glass is inverted, as they cannot toast with us this night... The chair (not shown) is empty, for they cannot be here. The white candle symbolizes the purity of those soldiers who fought for our nation. The flame symbolizes this country’s dedication to support prisoners of war and soldiers missing in action and the never ending struggle to secure their freedom and account for them. A slice of lemon on a bread plate reminds us of their bitter fate. The single red rose – symbolizing mourning – displayed in a vase, reminds us of the families and loved ones of our comrades-in-arms who keep their memories alive “lest we forget.” The red ribbon tied so prominently on the vase, is reminiscent of the red ribbon worn upon the lapel and breast of thousands who bear witness to their underlying determination to demand a proper accounting of our missing. The salt is symbolic of the family’s tears as they mourn for their soldiers’ absence from the family. Remember, all of you who served with them and called them friends, brothers, sisters, comrades and team mates - who depended upon their might, and relied upon them; for surely they have never forsaken you.
