Notes Workshops in and around Limoges in France produced enamelled works from the 12th to 14th centuries. Champlevé is a process where enamels (resembling glass) are poured into grooves of metal then polished down to the same level of the surrounding metal. This missal cover, portraying a crowned Christ on the Cross with two attendant figures in the Byzantine style, would have been used to cover, decorate and protect a book containing prayers and rites of the church.
