Summary

[edit]
Description
English: 1706 bookplate of Gostlet Harington, Gentleman, of Marshfield, Gloucestershire. Arms:

Sable, a fret argent (Harington, Baron Harington of Exton) quartering: Gules, a chevron (ermine) between three pheons or (Gostlett) (Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884, p.414 "Gostlett of Marshfield, Gloucestershire"). Text from: W. J. Hardy, F.S.A., Book-Plates, 2nd ed., London, 1897 [1]: "The book-plate of 'Gostlet Harington of Marshfield, in the Coun. of Glocester, Gent., 1706,' is unique, the mantling being cut like strawberry leaves. There is a peculiar effect produced by the way in which this example is printed, and the lettering of the inscription is also unusual."

In 1650, at Bath Abbey, Somerset, John Gostlett married Mary Harington (1628-1698), baptised at Corston, Somerset, a daughter of John Harington of Kelston, Somerset, by his wife Dionys Ley, a daughter (and eventual co-heiress) of w:James Ley, 1st Earl of Marlborough (1552–1629). Mary Harington was buried in Marshfield Church, Gloucestershire, where her memorial reads "Near this place lieth interred the body of Mary Gostlet, widow of John Gostlet, Esq. and daughter of John Harrington of Kelston in the county of Somerset, Esq. by Lady Dionessa Leigh, daughter and co-heiress of the Rt. Hon. James Earl of Marlborough, who departed this life Oct the 27, 1698". (Source: www.wikitree.com[2])
