Description
English: Seal of the Archdeaconry of Carlisle, and Arms of the Venerable William Jackson, D.D., Archdeacon of that Diocese from 1856 to 1862. The seal is of great antiquity, representing the blessed Virgin and child, with St. Peter bearing the keys.

Arms. — Arg. on a fess between 3 cocks' heads erased sable a greyhound courant between 2 pheons or, all within a bordure azure platee (Jackson) ; impaling, Gules, a chevron between 3 quatrefoils or (Crump).

Crest. — A cock's head erased sa., combed and wattled gules.

Motto.— Vertuti Yigila.

The Yen ble William Jackson, D.D., younger son of the Rev. Thomas Jackson, Rector of Grasmere. Westmorland, by Sarah, dau. and heiress of Thomas Partridge, Esq., was born at the Rectory, Grasmere, 17th Dec. 1792. In 1811 he took his degree of B.A. with honours (2nd class lit. hum.) at Queen's College, Oxford, of which he was a scholar, and subsequently fellow, tutor, and bursar. In 1827 he was Whitehall preacher. Domestic Chaplain to the Earl of Yerulam and the Earl of Lonsdale ; he was presented by the latter in 1828 to the living of Lowther, Westmorland, which he held up to the time of his death. At various times he also held the livings of Cliburn, St. John's, Whitehaven, and Penrith. From 18461855 he was Chancellor of the Diocese of Carlisle, Archdeacon from 1856-1862, and Canon of Carlisle 1858-1862, in which year he was elected Provost of Queen's College, Oxford. He was also a J.P. for the counties of Westmorland and Cumberland.

Dr. Jackson married 9th May, 1829, Julia Eliza, eldest dau. of John Gregory Crump of Allan Bank, Westmoreland, Esq., by his wife Mary, only dau. and eventually heiress of John Hamerton, Esq., by whom he had issue four daughters : (1) Julia-Marian, (2) Louisa-Lilias, both died young, (3) Georgiana-Isabella, and (4) Agnes-Beatrice, married 17 April, 1879, her cousin John Hamerton Crump, 2nd son of the late George Hamerton Crump of Chorlton, Cheshire, Esq., J.P. for co. Salop, by his 2nd wife Harriet-Fanny, dau. and heiress of Lieut.- Col. Thomas Maddock.

The Yen ble Archdeacon Jackson died 13th Sept. 1878, his wife having died 7th March, 1873. Both are buried at Lowther. Dr. Jackson quartered with his paternal coat the arms of Partridge, Dalton, and Braithwayte.
