Description
Nederlands: Op 15 maart in 1345 vond een sacramentswonder plaats: het Mirakel van Amsterdam. Op de schilderij wordt een hostie door een vrouw uit het haardvuur gehaald. Het braaksel van de zieke man was een dag eerder daarin geworpen volgens kerkelijke voorschriften. Maar wonder boven wonder, de hostie brandde niet! Amsterdam werd vervolgens een bedevaartplaats. Op de plek van de wonderhostie werd een grote bedevaartkerk – de Kapel ter Heilige Stede – gebouwd tussen 1346 en 1347. De hostie werd vereerd door pelgrims en Amsterdam groeide snel. In in 1578, raakte de Hostie van Mirakel vernietigd of vermist. De bedevaartkerk was afgebroken in 1908.
English: On March 15 in 1345 an Eucharistic miracle took place: the Miracle of Amsterdam. In the painting, a wafer is taken by a woman from the hearth fire. The sick man's vomit had been thrown in the day before according to church regulations. However, miraculously, the wafer did not burn! Amsterdam subsequently became a place of pilgrimage. A large pilgrimage church – the Chapel of the Heilige Stede – was built on the site of the miracle-wafer between 1346 and 1347. The Wafer was venerated by pilgrims and Amsterdam grew fast. In 1578, the Miracle Wafer was destroyed or went missing. The pilgrimage church was demolished in 1908.
