Description Minolta XG9 and 58mm f1.2. The maximum lens aperture of f=1.2 results in the visibly large diameter of the front lens. Such lenses were (and are still in 2023) much more expensive than standard 50 mm lenses, which had a maximum aperture of between (ca.) 1.7 and 2.0. The large diameter is/was more complicated to design and produce, resulting in a higher price. The large opening had the effect of more light coming through the lens onto the film, making it possible to use shorter shutter speeds, especially relevant for sports photography or at low light levels.
