Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Built in 1896-1897, this Classical Revival-style warehouse building was designed by William Channing Whitney for The Minneapolis Iron Store Company, one of the largest heavy hardware, carriage and sleigh stock, wagon maker’s supplies, and lumber tool supply companies in the United States. The Minneapolis Iron Store Company remained in the building until moving to a larger structure in 1916. The building was later home to the Industrial Lighting Supply Company, and has also previously gone under the name of the Whitney Block. The building features a red brick exterior with doric pilasters, a brick cornice with dentils, a banded base, a large glass and iron storefront on the northern two-thirds of the main facade, and an enclosed storefront at the corner of 2nd Street and North 2nd Avenue. Now known as The Whitney, the building houses a condominium on the upper floors and retail spaces on the ground floor. The building is a contributing structure in the Minneapolis Warehouse Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.
