| Description |
English: Miners' Library, Wanlockhead The white slate-roofed building beyond the memorial is the restored Miners' Library. Founded in 1756 it is the second oldest community subscription library in Scotland, after that in nearby Leadhills (founded 1741). These libraries enabled working miners and their families to improve their education and widen their outlook. It's humbling to think of their commitment to self-improvement compared with life today. The restored building houses over 2500 volumes and is open to visitors as part of the mining museum. |
