County—Continued. 3. Wabuska.Ormsby County: 4. Carson City. SANDSTONE. Ormsby County: 1. Carson City. IDAHO. By G. F. LouQHLiN. Idaho, as shown on the geologic map of North America, may bedivided geologically into seven parts. The part north of the lati-tude of Moscow consists mostly of an extensive area of the AlgonkianBelt series, and includes in its western part a considerable area ofmetamorphic Paleozoic strata. These formations at many places arecut by bosses of granitic rocks and by sills and dikes of diabase andamphibohte. The central part of the State is covered by an immensebatholith of granite or granodiorite, of late Cretaceous age, whichincloses several areas of pre-Cambrian gneiss and schist. Paleozoicrocks occur extensively east of the southern end of the granite batho-lith, and also in the Great Basin ranges which occupy the southeasternpart of the State. They arc also exposed in limited areas along SnakeRiver and certain tributary canyons, where overlying formations

Triassic and Jurassic formationsoccur to a considerable extent along Snake and Salmon River basinsin the western part of Idaho County, and also near the easternboundary of the State from St. Anthony southward, where they areaccompanied by Cretaceous rocks. Tertiary sediments, for the mostpart only imperfectly consohdated, are present along the valleys ofSnake and Payette rivers near Boise, and also in Lemhi Valley fromSalmon southward. Light volcanic rocks of early Tertiary age, rhyolitic and andesitic flows and tuffs, are known to be abundant inthe mountains between the Snake River valley and the south andeast boundaries of the State. The great Columbia River basalt field,of late Tertiary age, occurs in the western part of the State north ofLewiston and as far sout
