English: Milton a Poem, copy C, object 4 (Bentley a, Erdman 4, Keynes a)
Sector CD Plate Illustration: A Druid landscape includes four major figures. A gowned figure, probably female, squats or kneels in a contracted posture in the lower left corner of the design. She faces to the right, with at least one hand raised to her face and her head bowed. Just to the right is a standing nude female with face twisted to the left. She holds in her raised right hand an elongated distaff. Her left arm is at her side; from her left hand dangles a spindle on a thread. Thus, she is spinning thread. In the center of the design is a large, ovoid stone (suggesting an egg or perhaps even a skull?). A gowned figure with long hair, probably female, kneels on top of this stone, facing left. Her body is contracted, with arms dangling downward. The final figure, near the right margin, is nude and seen from behind. The body looks masculine, but the bun on the back of the figure's head indicates another female. She too holds a long distaff (raised left arm and hand) and a spindle dangling on a thread from her right hand. She is spinning thread. Her right arm is raised horizontally. Her legs are spread in an elegant posture; her body assumes a contrapposto stance. The three figures on the left and center are placed before a cliff, above which are three Druid trilithons. A hill appears in the background on the far right; it supports two or perhaps three trilithons. The coloring of the sky on the far right suggests a sunrise or sunset. At least two birds fly in the sky, just right of lines 29 and 30 of the text. Cloud outlines also appear above the figure on the right. Component (Sector C) Keywords: female, gown, facing right, contracted, squatting, kneeling, arm raised, hands on face, bowing, head down A gowned figure, probably female, squats or kneels in a contracted posture in the lower left corner of the design. She faces to the right, with at least one hand raised to her face and her head bowed. Component (Sector C) Keywords: female, nude, standing, contrapposto, spinning, twisted, facing left, arm raised vertically, arm at side, holding, distaff, spindle, thread A nude female stands in a contrapposto posture and holds in her raised right hand an elongated distaff. Her left arm is at her side; from her left hand dangles a spindle on a thread. She is spinning thread. Her head is twisted to face to the left. Component (Sector CD) Keywords: female, gown, kneeling, long hair, contracted, hunched over, facing left, arms down, arm dangling, stone, egg, skull In the center of the design is a large, ovoid stone (suggesting an egg or even a skull?). A gowned figure with long hair, probably female, kneels on top of this stone, facing left. Her body is contracted and hunched over, with arms dangling downward. Component (Sector D) Keywords: female, nude, seen from behind, standing, holding, spinning, arm raised vertically, arm raised horizontally, distaff, spindle, thread, contrapposto, legs spread, bun A figure near the right margin is nude and seen from behind. The body looks masculine, but the bun on the back of the figure's head indicates a female. She holds a long distaff (raised left arm and hand) and a spindle dangling on a thread from her right hand. She appears to be spinning thread. Her right arm is raised horizontally. Her legs are spread in an elegant posture; her body assumes a contrapposto stance. Component (Sector CD) Keywords: Druid, cliff, trilithon The three figures on the left and center are placed before a cliff, above which are three Druid trilithons. Component (Sector D) Keywords: hill, trilithon A hill appears in the background on the far right; it supports two or perhaps three trilithons. Component (Sector D) Keywords: sky, sunrise, sunset Blue, pink, and yellow washes in the upper portion of the design indicate sky. The coloring of the sky on the far right suggests a sunrise or sunset. Component (Sector D) Keywords: bird, flying At least two birds fly in the sky, just right of lines 29 and 30 of the text. Component (Sector D) Keywords: cloud Cloud outlines appear above the standing figure on the right. Sector AB Interlinear Illustration: Curving lines right of lines 3-8 in the text may be vines, veins, or sinews. A Druid landscape fills the space between lines 15 and 16 of the text. We see, from left the right, a trilithon with at least one large tree behind it, a group of several standing and perhaps a few sitting figures, a large stone, and what may be side views of three or four more trilithons. Wavy lines right of lines 16-19 of the text, running below line 19, and filling the space between lines 21 and 22 may be vines, veins, or sinews. Component (Sector B) Keywords: vine, veins, sinews Curving lines right of lines 3-8 in the text may be vines, veins, or sinews. Wavy lines right of lines 16-19 of the text, running below line 19, and filling the space between lines 21 and 22 continue this motif Component (Sector AB) Keywords: Druid, trilithon, stone, tree A Druid landscape fills the space between lines 15 and 16 of the text. We see, from left the right, a trilithon with at least one large tree behind it, a large stone, and what may be side views of three or four more trilithons. Component (Sector A) Keywords: group of figures, standing, sitting, Druid To the left of the left-most trilithon between lines 15 and 16 of the text are some small forms that may be standing and sitting figures. Given their context among trilithons, these may be Druids. Component (Sector A) Keywords: grass Green coloring beneath the left-most trilithon and the group of figures suggests grass. Component (Sector AB) Keywords: sky, cloud, sunrise, sunset Cloud outlines appear in the interlinear design between lines 15 and 16 of the text. Blue, pink, and yellow washes indicate sky at sunrise or sunset. |
