English: Milton a Poem, copy C, object 5 (Bentley 4, Erdman 6, Keynes 4)
Sector E plate Illustration: A diminutive horse and rider emerge on a road to the right of an immense trilithon in this Druid landscape. To the right is a giant stone, perhaps a Druid "rocking stone." Stars, clouds, and a crescent moon appear in the night sky above and to the right of this stone, with one star beneath the lintel of the trilithon and two to its left. Two small trees grow at the foot of the trilithon's left post. Below these is a clump of trees; the small forms to the right of these trees may be sheep lying on the ground. A very small shepherd holding a crook stands to the right of the flock. Green tinting in the lower half of the design suggests hills covered with grass. The horseman has been associated by some critics with William Hayley, Blake's horseback-riding patron who figures prominently in the autobiographical allegory of the poem. Component (Sector C) Keywords: riding, facing right, horse, hat, Hayley A diminutive horse and rider emerge on a road to the right of an immense trilithon in this Druid landscape. Component (Sector E) Keywords: trilithon, Druid, stone, road, star, cloud, moon, night, sky This Druidic landscape is dominated by an enormous trilithon. To the right is a large stone poised on a pinnacle; it may be a Druid "rocking stone." A hill appears behind the right post of the trilithon. A road emerges to its right, between large stones. The night sky shows stars (perhaps 8 altogether), clouds, and a crescent moon on the right, with a single star beneath the lintel of the trilithon and two left of its left post.
Wavy horizontal lines suggest vines between lines 7 and 9 and between lines 14 and 16 of the text. The first of these vines ends in loops suggesting a spiral up the right margin. A similar vine runs partway beneath the last line of text. In the bottom margin, dark coloring suggests a patch of earth, possibly with a hill or mound on the left. Component (Sector AB) Keywords: vine, loop, spiral Wavy horizontal lines suggest vines between lines 7 and 9 and between lines 14 and 16 of the text.
