English: Milton a Poem, copy C, object 4 (Bentley 4, Erdman 6, Keynes 4) detail-b
Sector CD Plate Illustration: A Druid landscape includes four major figures. A gowned figure, probably female, squats or kneels in a contracted posture in the lower left corner of the design. She faces to the right, with at least one hand raised to her face and her head bowed. Just to the right is a standing nude female with face twisted to the left. She holds in her raised right hand an elongated distaff. Her left arm is at her side; from her left hand dangles a spindle on a thread. Thus, she is spinning thread. In the center of the design is a large, ovoid stone (suggesting an egg or perhaps even a skull?). A gowned figure with long hair, probably female, kneels on top of this stone, facing left. Her body is contracted, with arms dangling downward. The final figure, near the right margin, is nude and seen from behind. The body looks masculine, but the bun on the back of the figure's head indicates another female. She too holds a long distaff (raised left arm and hand) and a spindle dangling on a thread from her right hand. She is spinning thread. Her right arm is raised horizontally. Her legs are spread in an elegant posture; her body assumes a contrapposto stance. The three figures on the left and center are placed before a cliff, above which are three Druid trilithons. A hill appears in the background on the far right; it supports two or perhaps three trilithons. The coloring of the sky on the far right suggests a sunrise or sunset. At least two birds fly in the sky, just right of lines 29 and 30 of the text. Cloud outlines also appear above the figure on the right. Component (Sector C) Keywords: female, gown, facing right, contracted, squatting, kneeling, arm raised, hands on face, bowing, head down A gowned figure, probably female, squats or kneels in a contracted posture in the lower left corner of the design.
