Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Mill Hill West Taken from the highest part of the Gibraltar Point Nature Reserve looking westwards.

From the information board:

"The view is over the freshwater marsh and the old saltmarsh which developed in the 19th century. Today only the highest spring tides cover the saltmarsh with its salt-tolerant plants such as sea purslane and the colourful sea lavender. Skylark, meadow pipit and reed bunting breed here and it is a hunting ground for kestrel and other predators. The West Dunes, which extends southwards beyond the Visitor Centre (beyond the left of the photo) were the front line dunes in the 18th and 19th century. The Coastguard House which now houses part of the Field Station was built in 1859 on what was then the edge of the sea. The dunes are covered with a more mature vegetation of grassland scrub and woodland. This diversity is maintained by mowing, grazing and scrub management without which the scrub would become totally dominant. Beyond the reserve to the west (middle distance) is the Lincolnshire Marshland bounded by the low line of the Wolds in the distance."
