| Description |
On 2 April 1937, the free milk in schools scheme began in New Zealand, the first of its kind in the world. The scheme was an initiative of the first Labour government (1935-1949) in response to social and economic conditions created by the Depression. The primary purpose of the scheme was to enhance the health of New Zealand children by providing a free half pint of milk to each child every school day. An additional benefit of the scheme was to use up surplus quantities of milk, so partnerships between schools and local milk providers were established to ensure a regular supply of fresh milk was delivered daily to every school. Regional schemes had been trialled for several years before the launch of the nationwide scheme, which continued until 1967. These photos show pupils from a Nelson school enjoying their free milk in 1938.
