English: Military hockey players from across Europe gathered at the Olympic Ice Stadium in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, for the 22nd Annual Armed Forces Alpine Classic hockey tournament Feb. 20-22. The event included 14 teams including teams from the Kaiserslautern Military Community, Germany; Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany; Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe in Belgium; Naval Support Activity Naples, Italy; U.S. Army Garrison Stuttgart, Germany; and others. Players hailed from Belgium, Canada, the United States and other countries. The slate included 22 games to open the round-robin tournament that included a skills competition, an all-star game and trophies. The Kaiserslautern teams play in memory of Airman 1st Class Zachery Cuddeback, killed by a gunman at the Frankfurt, Germany, airport March 2, 2011. Before his death, Cuddeback also played hockey with one of the Kaiserslautern-based teams. The ice rink played host to the winter Olympics in 1936 here. (DOD Photo by Jason Tudor/RELEASED) |
