| Description |
English: Milestone to Salisbury and Andover. The milestone is located on the south-eastern elevation of the old Town Hall and would have been of significance when the A4 was the main coaching road from London to the West. The style of the calligraphy and the use of 'f' for 's' puts the date to the 18th century. Unusual though for the distance (27 in Arabic numbering) to be shown in Roman numerals. Compare the style with this, which is of about the same vintage 345655 I imagine the distance to Andover lies beneath the level of the more modern footway. |
