Description

c/n 539. Built 1937. Later allocated RAF serial ‘BB661’ but most famously known as ‘G-AFBS’ as this is how it appeared in government photographs taken of it to represent the type. The Miles Magister was also known as the Miles Hawk Trainer III. On display in the ‘AirSpace’ hangar at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford Airfield, Cambridgeshire, UK. 26th January 2018

The following history for G-AFBS comes from the IWM website:-

17 September 1937 - manufactured at Woodley, Berkshire by Phillips and Powis Aircraft Ltd as an M.14. Registered as G-AFBS. 6 October 1937 - received Certificate of Airworthiness. Served with No.8 E+RFTS Woodley. Modified to M.14A in early 1940. 17 Sept 1940-Impressed to RAF - serial BB661 20 Nov 1941 - 32 MU RAF St Athan 21 July 1942 - No. 10 FIS Woodley Coded FDT-A 28 May 1946 - 51 MU (for storage) Sold June 23rd 1948 to BOAC reg G-ADDU 23 June 1948 - to Airways Aero Association. Reverted to G-AFBS when ID was discovered 7 June 1950 - Certificate of Airworthiness renewal Oct 1952 - Sold to Denham Aero Club 1962 - Sold to Mr T.P.M Jones, Blackbushe, Hants. 1964 - Acquired by Graham Johnson and restored to static condition at Skyfame Aircraft Museum.

1979 - With closure of Skyfame transferred to Imperial War Museum”
