VEDUTA IDEALE DEL CASTELLO DI MIL.Wo NELLA DI S. MUNSTEK, EDIZIONE DEL 1550. mayslra e più tardi del Tesoro, allangolo ovest del quadrato sforzesco. Lannosusseguente a Giovanni da Milano, morto di peste, successe Jacopo da Cortona e,per la decorazione della parte centrale della fronte del Castello volta verso la città,Antonio Averulino di Firenze detto il Filarete. La fronte doveva esser costituita dìuna robusta cortina racchiusa fra due alte torri rotonde in pietra: nel mezzo dellacortina doveva aprirsi la porta principale daccesso al Castello sulla quale si sa-rebbe innalzata la torre di difesa. 8o ITALIA ARTISTICA si trovava già allaltezza delle cortine laterali e Francesco Sforza disponeva che venisseinnalzata sino allimposta della merlatura. Il fiorentino Ridolfi. che la vide nel 1480, ladisse torre quadra altissima e il Guicciardini la chiamò torre di marmo bellissimafabbricata sopra la porla, nella sommità della quale sfava lorologio. Ma nel 1521,per un disgraziato accidente, la torre cadde e solamente in questi ultimi anni siè provveduto a rifabbricarla per opera del Beltrami che si giovò Mi numerosi do-cumenti grafici del tempo, quali un graffito della cascina Pozzobonella, un intarsia nel coro del Duomo di Cre-mona e diversi sfondi di qua-dri leonardeschi, oltre che ditorri analoghe tuttora in piedinei castelli di Cusago e di Vi-gevano.
