Summary

[edit]
Description

On 4 September 1990, Mike Moore replaced Geoffrey Palmer as Prime Minister of New Zealand.

That year it became apparent within the governing Labour Party that its chances of re-election looked slim. So the party put Moore forward. Opposition Leader Jim Bolger quipped that a ‘caretaker Prime Minister’ had been replaced by an ‘undertaker Prime Minister’. He was right - how Labour would have fared under Palmer is speculation, but Labour was not re-elected under Moore.

Mike Moore was New Zealand’s youngest MP when he was elected in 1972. Exiting parliament three years later, Moore then battled cancer, studied economic and trade issues, and returned in 1978. After Labour lost the 1990 election Moore was the opposition leader before being replaced by Helen Clark. Moore then went on to serve as director-general of the World Trade Organisation (1999-2002), and in 2015 was the New Zealand Ambassador to the United States. He has earned many honours and awards, and has published a number of books.

This image of Mike Moore dates from 1992, and comes from a series of Inter-Parliamentary Relations Office photographs.
