in bathing there was no Musti to warn her against itand at last Kerttu allowed herself to be persuaded.She was tired from her many days wandering and itwas true that the first touch of the cool water refreshedher. Now splash water in my face! Suyettar cried. But Kerttu didnt want to splash water intoSuyettars face for she supposed Suyettar was an oldwoman and she thought it would be disrespectful tosplash water into the face of an old woman. Do you hear me! screamed Suyettar. When Kerttu still hesitated, Suyettar looked at herwith such a terrible, threatening expression that Kerttudid as she was bidden. She splashed water intoSuyettars face and, as the water touched Suyettarseyes, Suyettar cried out: Your bonny looks give up to meAnd you take mine for all to see! Instantly they two changed appearance: Suyettarlooked young and beautiful like Kerttu, and Kerttuwas changed to a hideous old hag. Then too late sherealized that the awful old woman to whom she hadbeen so polite was Suyettar.

Suyettar bewitching Kerttu THE LITTLE SISTER 113 Oh, why, Kerttu cried, why didnt I heed poorMustis warning! Suyettar dragged her roughly out of the water. Come along! she said. Dress yourself in thoserags of mine and start that cake a-roUing! We oughtto reach your brothers house by to-night. So poor Kerttu had to dress herself in Suyettarsfilthy old garments while Suyettar, looking like a freshyoung girl, decked herself out in Kerttus pretty bodiceand skirt. Unwillingly now and with a heavy heart Kerttu threwdown the cake and said: Roll, roll, my little cake!Show me the way that I must takeTo find at last the brothers nineWhose own true mother is also mine! Off rolled the little cake and they two followed it,Kerttu weeping bitterly and Suyettar taunting her withugly laughs. Then suddenly Kerttu forgot to weep forSuyettar took from her her memory and her tongue. The little cake led them at last to a farmhouse beforewhich it stopped.
